How Do You Spend Your Days?

How you spend your days is how you spend your life.  

More than a brilliant quote from writer Annie Dillard, the above statement is another clue to discovering what you want. Think about it: If how you spend your days is how you spend your life, then how you want to spend your days should reveal how you want to spend your life.

Enter: Your Perfect Day

Wouldn’t it be amazing to go to bed on Sunday and not dread Monday morning?  Or simply for everyday to feel like the weekend? What would that look like for you?  I don’t know about you, but in my perfect day I set my own schedule, dress as funky as I want to (good-bye business suit!), do creative work all day in my own light-filled studio, meet interestingng new people, and have fabulous, two-hour lunches with my best girls and guys in trendy new restaurants around San Francisco.  I would have complete flexibility over my time so that I could travel all over the world plus be available to my family and friends as much as I wanted to.

But that’s just me. Perhaps you want something totally different and that is 100 percent fine! Or perhaps you want the same things. I don’t know what you want, but at the bollow of this post you will find prompts to discover what a perfect day means to you.  You can follow the prompts provided if you like but don’t feel restricted by them. They are simply guides to get you thinking, in detail, about what it would mean to have a perfect day. So sit back, put on music such as “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers and answer as honestly and uncensored as possible:  What does a perfect day look like to you? 

By planning out your perfect day, as unrealistic as it may seem to you now, you open your mind to discovering what changes need to happen in your life to make your perfect day an everyday reality. In other words, you will be discovering what you want.  

Helpful hint: Consider this activity a discovery of one of your perfect days, not “the” perfect day. Obviously, every day won’t be the same, even in your dream life, so just outline the day in a way that is inspiring to you. 

I WAKE UP

  • What time is it?
  • Where am I?
  • Is anyone with me? Who?
  • What’s the first thing I do?

I GET DRESSED

  • What am I wearing?
  • Where do I go?
  • What do I do for the rest of the morning?

IT IS LUNCH TIME

  • What do I eat?
  • Where do I go?
  • Am I meeting anyone? Who?  For how long?


THE AFTERNOON

  • What do you do for the rest of the afternoon? Work?  Something else?
  • Until when?

THE EVENING

  • Where do I go?
  • What do I do?
  • What do I do for dinner? Cook? Go out?
  • Is anyone with me?

BEDTIME

  • When do I go to bed?
  • What do I do just before bed?
  • As I close my eyes, what am I most grateful for?

    It also points to the fact that it is the little things that matter (What do I do just before bed?) It’s so easy to lose touch with that.

    My idea of a perfect LIFE is when you’re excited to go to bed on Sunday night because the next day is Monday!

  11. What a great exercise! I’m definitely going to do this in my journal. My idea of a perfect day is one that starts and ends with some peaceful time by a lake.

  12. I was just reading a science journal report about sleep and apparently it is not natural for us to sleep once at night for 8 hours. Up until the age of industrialism humans used to sleep twice a day, in many Victorian writings you will read about ‘first sleep’ and ‘second sleep’. The great part about working from home or even working for yourself, is you can do whatever suits you best. I often sleep very well for a few hours then I’m wide awake. I always thought it was a bad sleep pattern, but it seems it’s natural, so now I get p and do something then when I am tired again I go back to bed for my second sleep!

  13. A perfect day to me is one that I don’t feel has been wasted and my family is well and happy. So most days are good for me. I mostly have the freedom to do what I want, when I want. My best days are when I’ve completed tasks I set for myself. If I were to improve on things it would be, like you, to have the ability to travel, locally and internationally, finances permitting.

  16. I must admit that I do mostly live my perfect day. I don’t use an alarm. My wife and I have coffee time for about an hour and half. Then I shower and have a protein shake and take a walk. Then we dive into work. The only issue is that we don’t have all of the revenue that we would like but it is growing.
