12 Days to Get Your Online Biz Booming: Day 12

Get some business training

Look, I get it. You started your business for all sorts of reasons that have really nothing to do with owning your own business. You wanted freedom, to provide for your family, to not have a boss, to get your message out into the world, to make a difference, etc.  None of those reasons started with the words “I love business”, right?  So, it only stands to reason you have little to no training or experience in business. And if that is the case, why do you think this is somehow going to come naturally to you?

12th-day-of-christmas

We are typically in a learning phase for the first three years in growing a business. It does become easier; however, the first three years can be challenging and one needs to invest time and money learning—training, reading, and working with people to teach you what you do not yet know in order to build a booming business.

If you were ever an employee, you probably noticed that most new employees spend their first few weeks on a new job being mentored by others. The company is investing in the new employee's success by having someone show them the ropes. And so it is with your own success. You cannot expect to jump into entrepreneurship without continual education.

Learning to run a business is like learning to do any skill.

Bonus

One of the best things we can do for our business is take time away from it. And that is just what I am doing until January 5. Beginning now.  Here I come family, friends in ski slopes.

One of the reasons I do not need to work 24/7 is the result of working smarter rather than harder.

Self care should be practiced regularly.  Self care begins with making yourself a priority. How can you expect to perform and feel your best if you do not sleep well, eat healthy, exercise, fill your spirit, etc? Begin by making time for yourself every week. At least once a week why not block off an hour to do something that you love and that gives you enjoyment. If possible, also take 15 minutes per day to yourself. What does it do? It resets your clock and recharges your batteries. Exactly what you need to keep your balance in check.

What are three things you can do "smarter"? Jot them down and then schedule time on your calendar to make it happen.

  1. Great tips here. I’ll have to go back and read the previous articles in this series. Thanks.

  2. Hi Rachel, your blog seems to be just the kind of thing I need to read right now. I’ve been thinking about starting an on-line business featuring my art. Not as easy as all that. I’ll go read some more of your posts. Hope your last few days leading up to Christmas are tranquil and your Christmas is magical.

  3. I didn’t have any training online, but when my dad would take us on his Amway conference trips, I usually listened. I learned a lot in those days. I’ve always had that little entrepreneur spark… always since I was young, making crafts and selling them. It’s why I went back to school again to get a degree aside from my web design.

I do think training is necessary though. 🙂

  4. Thanks for sharing. I had someone once tell me, schedule two hours of quiet time and work. You will get more accomplished within those two hours than work 8 hours on your business. He also said keep a journa. Have a great holiday. Anita

  5. Lisa Barton :

Totally agree but I find easier said than done! I have 4 young daughters and both my husband and I run businesses – there’s barely time for anything but the basics elsewhere in our lives, I work as smart as I have found possible in the hours I am able to give 100% but life distractions keep popping up. As a result we are burnt out, stressed and surviving rather than living and feel guilty when we do take time off. We work until late into the night/early morning every day of the week. Without an extension to the number of hours in the day I’m not sure how we can schedule to take time out too!

    • I understand Lisa. With two busy careers in your family plus four children, there is not a whole lot of spare time to siting, relaxing, “me” time. I just have one child so I am not qualified to touch that.

  6. So true Rachel, work smarter not harder and you can take that time off. Thanks for sharing your great advice and enjoy your trip !!

I enjoy my business so much that I dedicate most of my free time on it. You are absolutely right – we have to use a mentor and spend the first few years studying about how to run a successful business. Since I love what I do so much, its difficult to take a break from it to take care of me – I really need to do that! ~Renee

    • Most of my clients are entrepreneurs–most work from their homes. The idea to take time out for recreation/relaxation/play often stops them short though. I learned the hard way to remind myself often of the need to simply take time off to relax, play and just some fun. It was hard because, like you, I love my business. Then I crashed and burned without even seeing it coming. Rest and rejuvenation is a necessity if we want to keep our creative juices flowing and avoid burn-out and stress.

Research has shown that having a play date with yourself, or with others, is a great way to keep your internal connection to your brilliance strong. It will definitely help to clear your head and help keep your creativity primed.

  8. Saqib Razzaq :

An awesome and well worth of time post. It is important for us to be active and make our blog popular in short time because after all our life is short.

  9. Hi Rachel, I agree that taking an hour’s break during the day is really important, and more than 1 hour if you’re only doing the business and not working (like me). I go for walks and do other exercise during the day, to get breaks.

I hope you’re having a great ski trip, I’m going away on the 5th of the month for a holiday, to visit with my grand children.

    • Hi Julieanne,

I had a great trip–thank you. I also will break up my day with a short hike or sometimes yoga when I have lots to accomplish. It’s a great refresher, isn’t it?

Enjoy your holiday and have a great 2014!

  10. I love this! This is definitely true when you are looking to create a true business. Having a mentor/business coach will help fuel you and your business.

I definitely agree with the self-care too. I love taking time to write and really reflect on myself and my life.

Excellent series and final tip! I’m clear I need some training as soon as I figure out what my business really is! LOL Bliss Habits has been a happy hobby and I’ve decided 2014 is the year I turn it into a business but I haven’t figured out what services/products I want to offer. What would you recommend for a good “creating content products” tutorial?
Kathy Sprinkle recently posted…What If …My Profile

    • Hi Kathy,

I am not sure what your business is (but neither do you yet LOL). It is important that you find out what it is that people are looking for on the internet so that you can focus your content on those issues. I would recommend taking some time to study the top hits in the search engines for products or services that are similar to what you what to sell.

Sounds like you have a lot of ‘discovery’ ahead of you 🙂

  13. Nick Catricala :

    Rachel,

  14. Smarter working…always looking for that – it seems many misunderstand smarter with shortcuts which smarter may well lead to but smarter working is so much more than that! Enjoy Whistler and Happy New Year!

  15. Great post Rachel. I make sure I have ME time each day so I never burn out. At times I have been at the threshold of burning out and that is when I knew it was time to take some time off. Between being a mom and having a business, it is essential to take time off.

  17. Hi Rachel,

Thanks so much for this reminder! I started working from home to be with my children and I absolutely love it. However you’re right that I need to take at least 1 hour of the week just for me. Being a mommy, wife, and a virtual assistant keeps me very busy.

Take care & Happy New Year!

  18. Hello Rachel, I take my me time every morning, I do get up and get my morning post done then I am off to get my work out in and have a nice breakfast , then some motivational reading of some sort before my work day starts. This is such a wonderful way for me to get myself ready for the day.

I am thinking about adding another half hour or so of exercise in the afternoon or late evening yet this year, I just need to plan and do it Right?

    Thanks for sharing. Chery :))
