Before You Can Start a List…

Before You Can Start a List…

This is the second post in a series.  Read the first post here.
There are a few things you will have to have in place before your can begin building your list:

Email Marketing software with an autoresponder

To grow your email list, you need the right email software that can store and segment your list, has autoresponder capabilities, and allows you to schedule and send emails.  Once set up, an autoresponder will automatically send emails out when prompted so you can spend your valuable time doing more interesting things. My favorite email software is Aweber and it is what I always recommend.  Of course, there are other options available with differing features, benefits and pricing that you may prefer. You will need to conduct the research to discover which one best meets your needs.
Everything in my business starts with email; therefore, if I cannot get my email delivered or my list host is not working for some reason, I am dead in the water. Simply put, if the email stops, the money stops. I have tried a few other email providers and some of them have caused me some serious pain.  Aweber gets my email delivered.  They have a good reputation with all the various email service providers like Gmail and Yahoo Mail.  That means your email stays out of the Spam box (which is obviously critical for your business). When I hit that Send Button, the email goes out–fast. That may sound obvious; however, when I have tested some other email hosts, it has taken up to 24 hours to get the email delivered.

An Email Newsletter/Ezine

Once you begin building your list, it is important that you also work on keeping it strong and healthy. One way to do that is to stay in touch with them on a weekly basis via your email newsletter, Web TV or video.  Remember, relationships are key.  Your clients are the focus–not your company or your product).  Creating happy customers who love you is the ticket to long-lasting wealth building online.

A Lead Magnet

You also will need a lead magnet–the reason your prospect will opt in to your list.  The next post in this series will cover that.

Note: I am an affiliate with Aweber.  This means that if you create an account using that link above, I will receive a small commission.  Rest assurred that I would not risk my reputation by recommending things unless I believed in them.

  1. Excellent advice, Rachel.

Get a free offer in front of your visitors and have them opt in to receive it somewhere on your site. They will automatically be subscribed to your List which is data-based on your auto-responder.

Of course, the most important advice you’ve given here is to carefully and consistently (emphasis: consistently) build a relationship with your subscribers. That’s the way a List gains value for you and becomes a true asset.

The process is not difficult, but it requires a lot of work and dedication to make it work. The rewards make it well worth the effort, though.

  3. Excellent advice Rachel and building that list is key. It takes time but will eventually grow, and as you say keep in touch with your subscribers otherwise they are likely to just opt OFF your list next time. Thanks for sharing.

  4. According to some stats the average value of a list is $1 per subscriber per month, so in theory you should get around $100 a month. Depends how responsive the list is and is only an “average”. That is the importance of a list but you do need to cover everything included in this post to get on the right track. Thanks for sharing

  5. List building is step one. Keeping the relationship with your list is key. Several years ago I was too busy doing the work and didn’t pay attention to my list and I’ve had to rebuild my list. I won’t make that mistake again.

  6. This is really great information about building a list. I do have to admit that I do like Aweber. Recently I have noticed that they have features that are similar to Constant Contact. At one time you had to have a url for your pictures, but now they allow a simple upload. Thank you so much for providing this and can’t wait to see your other suggestions in your series.
