12 Days to Get Your Online Biz Booming: Day 1

Growing a successful online business follows a basic formula and, if you follow the formula, you will build a booming online business.

A critical ingredient to the formula of success is to identify a target market and niche that you will serve. Many solopreneurs mistakenly do not focus on a specific market when first starting their business. Many find it difficult to pinpoint a specific market because they feel that they can help everyone and to select a specific market would be limiting.

Selecting a target market does not limit you at all. It really is quite contrary—selecting a target market to focus on opens you up to more opportunities and success. The benefit of selecting a target market and niche is that it allows you to focus your time, energy and resources in areas that will realize the greatest results. You can grow your business by identifying and focusing on a specific problem that your business solves or a specific result that it brings about. You then market to the people who have that problem or who want that result.

When solopreneurs give the impression that they are ready, willing and able to serve anyone for any thing, they risk confusing the people they speak to. People want to hire "experts" to solve their problem.

Identify your target market and niche so that you know who you are selling to and what they want most.  To best access your target market, answer these two questions: 

  1. First, where do I find them?
  2. Second, how do I access them where they are?

  2. What a wonderful post. And browsing around your blog it looks like you have a wealth of information that I could certainly use. I do still have trouble indentifying my niche. I think my niche may be mothers over age 30, but that still seems too broad.

  3. That is one thing I have struggled with forever…and with so many different turns in my road, I would imagine whatever “target” I had, it was constantly changing. For now, I have kinda given up on that idea…maybe at some point that will change, who knows?

    • Elizabeth, I have found that one does not necessarily have to be as specific in who their target is IF they are REALLY specific about what they can do for their target market. For example, if coach teens who have a GPA of 1.0, it is not necessary to care as much about what kind of parents you are targeting. If your specific service is “Preventing your child from failing high school”, that may be clear enough.

    Thank you so much for the mention! Yes, we do have to have our target market in mind. Leaving things too open ended does confuse people. I have learned that the hard way when I was a new blogger.

    But then I ran into that little trick you linked to. I wrote and wrote until my fingers became part of my keyboard of who might be my target audience. I made a specific list and I can tell you that it took a long time because I was dedicated to it. I needed to know who specifically can I help with my knowledge.

    I fine tuned it and then created that avatar so I could have a visual picture on my desktop that I could write to. Well, this has given me better writing skills and a stronger following on my blog.

    But most of all, when it comes to the part of business where we need to sell our product and/or services, this method had fine tuned my “target” audience.

    • It was my pleasure Donna. I did not really begin to think about a target market until I started sharing my business online but I noticed a marked difference in income and marketing ease once I identified those nice people who want to give me money.

  5. I’ve seen people who makes their products first before they even target their market and would just try to sell their products or services to everyone. I totally agree, we need to find our target market or niche. In the case of existing products or services, we still need to identify the target market and focus on them, see what they want or need, and improve our existing products/services based on their input.

    • Oh yes Chery, by default, that is marketing to everyone and anyone. And that takes an endless amount of time and energy. Since most of us only have a limited amount of time, money, and attention to devote to marketing, it is better to spend it pointing our efforts directly toward the prospects most likely to become our clients, yes?

  10. Maybe the first step is “who they are”. It is easy to be generic (women in their 40s, moms entrepreneurs, divorced men), and harder to give them a name, specify how many kids they have, their age, what is their occupation, how much money they make, etc. And all this comes from research. Thanks for this! 🙂

  11. We so often need to revisit the niche and target market, don’t we Rachel?

    Newbies have to aim at the right target, but over time it seems to shift. So they need to realign their sights. Intermediate and even advanced bloggers/marketers can’t escape this continual process, though. Every time we craft a product, a video, a post… any content at all… it points back to a specific target within our niche, and often we find ourselves drifting off center.

    Sometimes that’s good as we move into new markets related to our primary niche, but sometimes we’re just getting off base altogether and need to pull in the reins. This is where a coach or partner, someone with a slightly different perspective, can be invaluable, just to keep us in harmony with our target audience.

    Focus on what your talents and experiences lead you with. Most people do not understand where to locate people that have the interest in what they have experience with. That takes work and everyone wants fast results. This is something we have to help people with!

  17. You have hit the nail right on the head with the first Day of Christmas Rachel.
    I know now that this is the exact place to start, but it is a very difficult step for many, including me… and we often press on without ‘nailing’ this point at the beginning.
    Once your niche is found, things flow more easily 🙂
